The industrial coastline of the north east was one of the first themes of my work; I still use sketches made over thirty years ago around the (then) half derelict Hartlepool docks.

Almost by chance, in the last two years, I found myself spending some time around the coast of Britain, both on land looking out to sea, and at sea looking landward.

The result is that I have made a number of pictures on a generally maritime theme; some are a little darker in emotional tone than is usual for me. The final picture in my sequence of the Camino de Santiago, 'Pilgrim's Progress', is a large, moody drawing of Cape Finisterre and the Atlantic stretching westward.
