My
works have always been carried out in a variety of media, often mixed.
The underlying theme, while largely using elements of the urban landscape,
is still more concerned with people; their relationships, their encounters
and their feelings, although the people themselves are seldom represented.
While all my works are based on particular places and incidents, in Britain and increasingly in Europe, from drawings made at the time, I am concerned that no matter how specific the emotion or sensation that I intend might be, the viewer will bring his or her own experiences to bear. I do not expect to share my sentiments exactly; only to trigger a response of as nearly equal power as possible that is relevant to each individual who "reads" the picture. I believe that work with a genuine philosophical basis can still be immediate and accessible in its appeal. I never travel without a sketchbook; I am a compulsive (some say obsessive) draughtsman, and all my work relies on the thousands of drawings I have made over the years. I have recently been working on a series of maritime images from around the coast and at sea; my major project at the moment is a comprehensive series of works for the exhibition 'Pilgrim's Progress', based upon the sketches I made during my 1999 and 2000 pilgrimages to Santiago, work which I hope to extend in the future.
